Tortuguero is a small village on the Caribbean Coast of Costa
Rica. Translated, Tortuguero means "Region of
Turtles". The vast low lying region surrounding
Tortuguero, is covered largely by tropical rainforest. The
beach here is the most important nesting site of the endangered
Green Turtle in the Western Hemisphere. Their population
came perilously close to extinction in the 1960's. In
response, the Costa Rican government established Tortuguero
National Park in 1970, restricting development along the coast.
The park consists of 46,000 acres and protects 22 miles of
coastline for nesting. Giant Leatherback, Hawksbill, and
Loggerhead Turtles also nest here. |

More than 300 species of birds live in Tortuguero, along with
hundreds of species of amphibians, reptiles and mammals.
Just by boating along the canals and waterways during the
adventure getting there, visitors will most surely spot a
variety of these many animal species without even leaving
the boat.
Warm and humid, this region receives over 200 inches of rainfall annually.
The warm days are tempered by the trade winds and cool nights of
this rainforest region. With both plant and animal species
among the highest in Costa Rica, Tortuguero is considered a nature
lovers' paradise and cherished by all that visit and those who
live there. |
