From here our scenic drive towards the Poas Volcano Cloud Forest National Park takes us up the slopes of the Central Volcanic Mountain Range through beautiful landscape adorned with coffee, dairy, strawberry, flower and fern farms in addition to quaint typical small towns with well-kept homes.

POAS VOLCANO:  At approximately 9:00 a.m. we’ll enter the cloud forest of the Poás Volcano National Park where we'll walk to the crater, located at a cool 8,900 ft. above sea level.  Your guide will show you the beautiful giant leaves of the “Poor Man’s Umbrella” plant, epiphytes (air plants) and other plant species unique to this lush tropical cloud forest ecosystem.  From the crater’s rim you’ll have the unique experience of  looking down 1,000 ft. into an active volcano crater that's nearly 1 mile in diameter and constantly emitting sulfur fumes and steam.  The crater is distinguished by an array of colorful rock strata, an aqua green colored acid lake surrounded by tropical cloud forest and barren old lava floe rock formations.   You'll enjoy the spectacular views of the surrounding landscape.  An optional walk via a  rustic trail through the cloud forest back to the vehicle is available.

VIEW & FRUIT STOPS:  After leaving Poás at around 10:30 a.m. we'll make brief stops with a fantastic  view of the Central Valley below.  Further down the mountain, we'll sample fresh local strawberries and other fruits and snacks.

WATERFALLS:  By 11:15 a.m. we’ll arrive at the first of 2 spectacular waterfalls "La Paz" (“The Peace").  This impressive waterfall is surrounded by lush rainforest vegetation.  A unique wooden road bridge, with an interesting history, is located directly in front of the falls giving an excellent view of the falls. It's possible to walk behind this waterfall for another unique rainforest experience.

HUMMINGBIRDS:  A few miles down the scenic road with forest lined canyons and farm land we'll stop at the San Fernando Falls and enjoy a hummingbird feeding grounds.  A 300 foot waterfall spilling out of the rainforest canyon, provides a spectacular background to a wide variety of hummingbirds feeding from feeders giving an excellent opportunity to admire and photograph these amazing birds.  Complimentary coffee and clean restrooms are available at the country restaurant here

JUNGLE RIVER WILDLIFE MOTORBOAT CRUISE:  30 minutes after lunch, we arrive at the river town of Puerto Viejo.  Here we’ll take a 2 hour covered motorboat cruise through the shaded jungle   banks of the calm Sarapiquí River.  This is a pleasant and relaxing way to see monkeys, colorful tropical birds, Iguanas, crocodiles or caimans, sloth and other tropical animals.  See what life on a tropical jungle river is like, children swimming, people fishing in the river, farmland, banana plantations and the occasional home along its banks.
