You
May Have the Honors, but Your Opponent Hits First.
Even in foursomes where 50 yards is considered a
good shot, someone must be away. That person - the one
whose ball is farthest from the cup during play of a hole - is
deemed to have the "honor" and is entitled to play
first. The honor also extends to the person who scored
lowest on the previous hole.
The thing to know about the honor
is its application in stroke play vs. match play. In
stroke play, the person holding the honor should hit
first, but the order may be changed when it is expedient to do
so. There is no penalty for mixing up order of play to
quicken the pace of play, for example.
